Quilt Geometry and Elements of Art

The students will explore 4-patch and 9-patch quilt blocks and their variations. Concepts covered will be division of the square, power of the diagonal line, importance of positive and negative space in a design and symmetry versus asymmetry. After going through 2 days of exercises with these patterns and creating a class quilt each day, students will be given the opportunity to design their own original blocks based on the knowledge they have gained. Color theory will be discussed after the students have designed their blocks and the class will decide which 2 original blocks they wish to replicate. The final day will be spent creating the final class quilt and hosting a reception for the community.

Art for Pre-School

Rebekka works with pre-school students to provide them with opportunities to explore the elements of art through hands-on activities. Each activity is tied to a piece of children's literature appropriate for this age group. Rebekka shares the book with the group first and then children explore their creative natures through activities.

Asafo Flags of the Fante
(West African) Region

Students will explore the use of proverbs as a means of sharing cultural ethics in diverse cultures. The history of the Asafo flags created by the men of militia bands in Ghana will be studied with regard to the way in which European culture affected the Ghanaian culture. Students will experience the Asafo tradition through hands-on creation of a flag design illustrating a proverb. Paper collage will be the medium used for creating the flags.
