Paper Doll Series
Six years ago I began a project which called for the creation of 12
quilts detailing the lives of 12 inspiring American women of the 20th
Century. I titled this project, “Women’s Work”. The idea occurred to
me after I was commissioned by Phyllis George to make a quilt for her
collection. We settled on the paper doll theme, using garments worn
for seminal moments in her life to tell the story of her life. This
idea lead me to consider telling other women’s stories in a like
manner.
These women's stories are told in a unique manner through the
garments they wore for defining moments in their lives or as a means of
expressing who they are. The quilts invite interaction because they can
be manipulated just like the paper dolls of my youth. The garments are
tiny quilts themselves, attached to the main quilt, and can be
manipulated to dress the doll.
