I made my first quilt, with my grandmother’s help, when I was pregnant
with my first child because I thought that was what mothers were
supposed to do. My work is therefore rooted in and indebted to the
traditions of quiltmaking but branches out of them to allow me to
express my personal vision of the world. Although you could
technically sleep under any of my quilts, this emphasis on personal
expression allows them to move off the bed and find their rightful
place on the wall. Beauty is the thing I find most inspiring and
describing that beauty is what my work is all about. The human figure
is one of the images that I find most intriguing so my quilts are
populated by many personalities, most recently women who have led lives
that I find to be inspiring. I hope the work inspires the viewer to
forget for a moment the shortcomings of the human condition and revel
in the things that are most noble and beautiful about ourselves.
