Also based on a photograph taken by Doris Ullman in the 30’s, this
portrait of a woman carving a doll is placed in front of one of my all
time favorite traditional patterns, “Flying Geese”. The triangles in
this design are traditionally meant to evoke the image of geese in
flight, but I use them here to represent the mountain backdrop of the
life of this woman. Fabrics used to construct the pieced portion of
the quilt are scraps from the 30’s which were given to me for this
project by one of my students.
