My interest in doing stitched portraits was sparked by the gift of three movie magazines from the 1930’s. The perfection of these faces and their poses for the obligatory head shot all stars of that era sat for made them perfect candidates for honing my skills. The silk fabrics chosen for these machine appliqué and embroidered portraits are complimented by the silk organza fabrics used to make the yo yos that form their frames. The metallic threads woven into these fabrics make the piece shine like I imagine spot lights around their faces might shine. The stars portrayed in this piece are from left to right: Lana Turner, Gene Kelly, Bette Davis, Gregory Peck, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, Jane Wyman, Bing Crosby and Betty Grable.
