This portrait is of a student at Berea College in the 1930’s when she
was supporting her college education by making quilts. This portrait,
like all the others in the series, is drafted from an actual photograph
taken by Doris Ullman during the Great Depression years when she
documented the mountain people on a WPA project. The fabrics in the
pieced portion of the quilt are cottons printed and used for such
quilts in the same era. The quilt pattern is called the Lemoyne Star.
