The inspiration for this piece came from The Map, the one given out to make negotiating the NYC subway system easy for a visitor to the city. I have always loved the colors in which that map is printed and the way the trains are identified with circles of color and numbers or letters. The map is recreated for this piece in sections with silk fabrics and yo yos of the same fabrics connecting the sections. The train routes are noted on the map with machine embroidery and the number or letter for each train form a bisection for the composition as well as vertical borders. The top and bottom borders convey the inside of the train cars and reflect the postures and activities of the passengers who ride the trains who are another fascination for me when I visit the city.
