This quartet of portraits, based on high school and college formal portraits, was created to celebrate an exhibit entitled, The Yo Yo Sisterhood, displayed at the Garner-Furnish Gallery in August of 2006. The portraits are of the four quilt artists who formed the Sisterhood and whose work composed the exhibit. The portraits are of Jane Burch Cochran, Denise Furnish, Rebekka Seigel and Jane Lloyd all of whom referenced the quilt yo yo in their work. In this piece the yo yos serve to connect the four portraits and form the ornate frame surrounding them. The yo yo is described as a “novelty” quiltmaking technique. Circles of, silk in this case, are gathered around the edges then joined together with stitches. Traditionally the technique was used to create decorative objects such as coverlets.
